Statue in Memorial of Lafcadio Hearn


ueno statue This statue is just in front of The International Library of Children's Literature.
This is built by a poet Doï "Bansuï" Rinkichi, who learned from Hearn at the Imperial University of Tokyo, to fulfill the will of his son Eiïchi, who had respected Hearn very much with influence of his father.
On the front side of its pedestal is embedded the relief of Lafcadio Hearn, and other sides are engraved Chinese verses by Bansuï:
verses Letters lead the humanity to its grace
Pen makes this state come into bloom

Access from Tokyo Station

Use Yamanote Line anti-clockwise way (lane No. 3) to go to Uëno station.
At Uëno, go out the Park Exit and go right to find the Tokyo National Museum. If you find it, walk along the Museum and turn right. The Library is the second building on the left side, and you can find the statue just in front of it.
