Kishibo-Jin
(Ryûshô-In)



kishibojin According to the folklore, Kishibo-Jin (Kishimo-jin), or Goddess the Demoniac Children's Mother, formerly was a demon who ate many children. One day the Buddha came to her and told to repent. She did so and changed herself to the Buddhist Goddess of birth and health of children.
There are many temples for Kishibo-Jin in all over Japan, and some of them are very famous and many people visit there even today. There is one of the famous Kishibo-Jin temple in Zôshigaya, Tokyo, the town where Hearn's graveyard is located.
This Kishibo-Jin is small and not so famous, but the priests there are so proud that Hearn visited here and introduced it to the world.

  1. Go to Fujisawa Station.
     From Tokyo or Yokohama, use Tôkaidô Line.
     From Kamakura, use Eno-Den Line.
     Odakyû Line is also available.
  2. Walk to the north exit.
  3. Take a bus for Ôfuna Sta. at the Bus Lane #5.
  4. Get off the bus at the stop "Karasawa-Bashi" or "Karasawa-Jinja".
      (Karasawa-Jinja is closer to the temple, but some buses go another way.)
